DeathSpank

DeathSpank is a good game. I think it is well worth its asking price. There's enough hacky slashy action, enough laughs, enough time spent in this game world for it to be a worthwhile investment of your time. Easy Trophies/Achievements to boot.

DeathSpank is the story of DeathSpank, a hero raised to be a hero because he was foretold to be a hero. He is tasked with finding an artifact. After that, he is tasked with finding a whole bunch of other random crap. Which he does, because he is heroic.

The look of the game is neat, like animal crossing meets a pop-up storybook. The world itslef, the ground under DeathSpank's feet is solid. Yet curved. And it scrolls freely in any direction you would care to move. DeathSpank, the monsters and the NPCs that populate the world are also three dimensional. But all the set dressings: the trees houses, bushes rocks and so on are 2D. It's a unique look, well suited to this game.

The voice acting is also well suited to the game, there are many NPCs but it sounds like they used only a few voice actors who cycled through their repertoire of cliched accents. Like listening to an audio-book of fairy tales. But with storybook visuals to boot. And the music is distinctive and catchy.

The gameplay is not quite as charming. You can assign four different weapons to the four different face buttons, and using a different weapon for each strike on an enemy builds a combo meter and fills your super meter faster. But mashing buttons works almost as well.

The writing is where the real charm of the game dwells. The conversations with the NPCs, the item descriptions, every aside uttered by DeathSpank, they all wok together to bring a smile to your face. There were only a couple true laugh out loud moments, but many, many more smirk producers.

So:DeathSpank is a game with an interesting look and sound, less interesting gameplay, and well done writing. That easily adds up the 15 buck price tag.

To put it another way...
DeathSPank: I like it.
