Hurting Your Own Sales
This is old news I know but what the hell, I'll throw some comments on this...
Remember a week before Capcom's Resident Evil GC release. It was in January, the company just blasts out of nowhere, "Oh, by the way we're making a PS2 port for release in the fall".
Hmmm... Okay. This once exclusive GC game, within a week before it's release is shifted to a multi-platform title. Word on the net is that this discission was made by the big money wigs of the company and not by any internal staff. This is just ridiculous.
What bugs me the most is the timing of the announcement. It's not like Capcom couldn't wait until the summer to announce, "we've decided to release a PS2 port for a winter 2005-spring 2006 release date".
All they ended up doing was hurt their own sales. What a ridiculous announcement to do for a game you developed for years, had 2 or 3 revisions and garner a huge unknown budget just to piss off not only GC owners but the Resident Evil development team. Believe me, we're all pissed off by the news.
Not that sales haven't been good for the title, it was the biggest selling title of January and is still selling like gold but you know, you get that feeling that sales would have been higher if the big wigs at Capcom would just shut their yaps closed.
I just don't get the relationship Capcom has with Nintendo sometimes. They have such a great a relationship with Zelda and beyond that... blargh! Since the GameBoy Colour era, Capcom and Nintendo have co-produced/developed all the handheld Zelda titles to date. That's right, from Oracle of Seasons/Ages to The Minish Cap, they've handled the series together.
I guess all one can do is hope that Nintendo of America will secure the title as a North American GC exclusive and let the rest of the world fend for themselves. Argh!
