EA Again
Here's a little link for you: this is a link to the Penny Arcade message boards where they are talking about a memo EA circulated after the EA Spouse weblog got noticed. It's all about how they are going to improve the working environment. Sorry, they're looking into investigating possible theoretical solutions. My favourite part is this one:
We are looking at reclassifying some jobs to overtime eligible in the new Fiscal Year. We have resisted this in the past, not because we dont want to pay overtime, but because we believe that the wage and hour laws have not kept pace with the kind of work done at technology companies, the kind of employees those companies attract and the kind of compensation packages their employees prefer. We consider our artists to be creative people and our engineers to be skilled professionals who relish flexibility but others use the outdated wage and hour laws to argue in favor of a workforce that is paid hourly like more traditional industries and conforming to set schedules. But we cant wait for the legislative process to catch up so were forced to look at making some changes to exempt and non-exempt classifications beginning in April.
And here's my translation:
See, it's the government, man, they just don't get what we're all about, y'know. They just don't dig our whole scene, bra. They don't understand that you guys are artists. You guys don't want regular pay for regular hours. You guys are way too freespirited for that. You want to set your own schedules so that your creative juices can flow freely. And by your own schedule, we mean you show up when we tell you to show up and you stay until we fucking tell you to. And by creativity, we mean conforming to our committee designed and moron approved pablum for the lowest common denominator. These people trying to cause a commotion don't understand that we're not in it for the money, man, we're in it for the love. Okay, you guys are in it for the love. We're EA, we're only in it for the money. Hell, we'd fuck our mothers for the right kind of money. Screw that, we'd fuck our dead mothers. Seriously, we would. Just give us ten bucks. We got the knife right here. We're gonna slit momma's throat and then fuck the gash. Because we are EA. We fuck our dead mother(s).
I'm really starting to think that EA needs to fall. And fall hard. It's just too big. I mean, it's buying all these development houses up. It just absorbs them, splits the teams up and forces them to work on shit. Or it takes their good games and adds a bunch of crap licensed music and unnecessary menus to slog through. I don't know why these development houses let themselves be bought. Shit, EA bought Criterion. Criterion makes the RenderWare engine, as the link above mentions, nearly a quarter of all games made today use the RenderWare engine. EA holds sway over a quarter of the industry. That is fucked up. Plus it just bought a portion of Ubisoft. I don't like where all this is headed.
Not one bit.
